P&B Terminal team has participated in the Shadow Day for the first time in its history. Shadow Day is an annual event organised in Latvia which is aimed at occupational guidance for students, establishing closer ties between employers and students of educational institutions.
We offered boys to become a shadow of a sea logistics specialist and dive into the work of a customs warehouse in a sea port. Several locations were involved: office, warehouse, container yard.
Boys learned about what stages the cargo goes through on its way to the customer, what knowledge a logistics specialist should have. Then they had a big tour of the terminal. They witnessed the special machinery working with sea containers. They saw with their own eyes oversized cargos that have been accepted for storage and are awaiting transportation to the customer's warehouse.
Our large customs distribution warehouse is equipped with dock-type gates to facilitate handling operations. Several forklifts are working at the same time. The work is performed fast, smoothly, without pause. Watching the work of warehouse employees, boys learned about zoning inside the warehouse, about the rules for placing cargos inside the warehouse. We are very proud that our warehouse meets all requirements for warehouses in the customs zone, so there is really a lot to see.
After the tour, our shadows could meet all employees involved in the organisation of multimodal transportations. As part of a friendly conversation, we tried to draw their attention to those areas of knowledge that they will need in their work as logistics specialists, such as learning foreign languages, geography, economics. We showed them the other side of our work and, it seems, we were able to strengthen their desire to relate their future life to logistics.
